COMPETENCE DEVELOPMENT
“KNOWLEDGE IS USEFUL, APPLICATION
OF KNOWLEDGE IS POWERFUL.”
SECDI’s programmes are all competence based, requiring participants to be able to demonstrate their ability, not only to obtain knowledge, but also to apply that knowledge successfully.
Competence needs to be demonstrated by submission of relevant case studies or scenario-based assignments.
a. Fundamentals of Safety Engineering:
The program focuses on the fundamentals of Safety Engineering.
The program includes the following modules:
- Fundamentals of physical processes

INFORMATION SHARING
Through frequent webinars we share relevant information + challenge participants with one goal: safer operations. Although SECDI’s primary focus is competence development we acknowledge the need in industry for sharing of information. SECDI wants to add value to mines by sharing relevant developments with industry. We will therefore conduct a limited number of webinars mainly from the needs expressed from the mines.
TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT BENCHMARKING
SECDI has developed a comprehensive Traffic Management Excellence Assessment (TMEA)® framework. The evaluation comprises more than 200 elements and is structured at two levels. The high-level assessment verifies the existence of a risk-based Traffic Management System as is defined in the mine’s documented management systems, while the deep dive evaluation measures the details of each element. The evaluation comprises a self-assessment and an independent verification.
Operator / Safety Rep/Inspector Traffic Management Training program development
This service is to create digitized scenario-based questions to assist operators to comprehend the actual Traffic Management Systems that they operate in, the hazards present and the controls that is in place. This program is mine specific and is only available for companies that makes use of up to date mine survey plans, risk analysis and mine standards. The program is tailored for specific operator occupations and can be multi lingual.
Health and Safety Culture
The socio dynamics in mining operations require specialist support. Together with our partners, we assist mines to move towards normalized human resource dynamics.
The Mining Industry Culture Transformation Framework that was signed-off by the Minister of Mineral Resources and other stakeholder principals on 18 November 2011 has at its core the belief that the mining industry can be a much more progressive industry.
End 2021 is 10 years later and the Mine Health and Safety Council will mandate an independent evaluation of the progress the industry has made during 2021.
SECDI has partnered with VITOVA (PTY) Ltd to assist mines with one of the biggest challenges that is still facing the South African Mining industry, namely: normalised human resource dynamics. We call it Team Dynamics Health (TDH). Our industry is the pinnacle of human diversity, multiple nationalities, more than 11 local languages, some associated with multiple cultural nuances and core differences in beliefs and values. Add to this the highly unionised nature of the workforce, the perceptions and reality around trust gaps and the history of labour exploitation and we must acknowledge the enormous challenge that this brings to a mine that wants to produce tons of product every day.
As a socio technical system, a mine’s performance is the result of an integrated technical and human resources system. The TDH of a team has a significant impact on the team’s performance and the collective TDH of the mine reflects a major portion of the mine’s health and safety culture.
Our online TDH assessment tool is far advanced and will be piloted in q3 of 2021.
Traffic Management Digitalization
4IR maturity requires leveraging existing data sources, adding new sources of data + turning data into insights.
The advances made in technology as part of the 4th industrial revolution is providing mines with major opportunities to improve their traffic management systems. Leveraging operator support technology, CAS, digital twinning, dash-boarding, auto management and supervision will fundamentally change the risk management systems that the mine employ to ensure the safe movements of TMMs and pedestrians.
